Hey Bob, What are saying when you say VHTG? I have always like the feel of blowing on 'one scale' while the chords are moving under it. What you describe here sounds like "HTG" (Horizontal Tonal Gravity). I'm guessing that's what you are referring to here... Then VTG is "Vertical Tona...

I think the CMG stuff is an attempt to illustrate the movement between vertical worlds that is present in horizontal scales.

And then analyzing these relationships gives us clues as to how vertical states relate to one another.

Now check out the inverse of the above – the relationship of the sharp lying keys to F lyd. F# G# A# B C# D# E [ E LYD ] ### NO ASSOC. CMG TONIC STATIONS ### F# G# A B C# D# E [ A LYD ] ### NO ASSOC. Now think about these lydian scales in relation to the F Maj I chord and D- VI chord of F lyd. None of the sharp keys support the F Maj/D- chords on the I or VI. Only two of the flat keys support the F Maj/D- chords. These two flat lying keys are special because they are able to form the F maj/D- ch...

Cycle of Doom - one view

One view of the cycle and flat and sharp lying lydian keys. The home base of this example is F lydian (seen in the middle of the list). Above F lydian are all the sharp lying lydian scales and below F lydian are all the flat lying scales. I started each scale on F or F# for comparison's sake. This f...

Woah.

To bring together some features of recent threads, namely, the (vertical) Lydian b3 nine tone order scale, CMGs, and a (perhaps debatable) reference to the “Law of Resolving Tendenciesâ€

Sandy: Another scale to try on a Bb7b9 is Eb harmonic minor, which is represented in the LCC world as Cb lydian #2. This scale isn't mentioned in the older edition. Bob: Where is it mentioned in the latest edition? Also see p.147-148, "official scales" where Lydian b3 is listed as a Nine-T...

Dogbite says: the law of resolving tendencies (is this even mentioned in volume one?) I think this is the only concept in this thread that may not actually be (explicitly) in book I. I took the 101 class with George and was not able to take the second (which disappoints me greatly to this day). But ...

Hi Bob, I may be over-answering here, but what the heck. I said (and not very clearly): >The first gives us a picture of a vertical state (Bb lyd) being asked to resolve to something foreign to it (an F chord) - a chord that implies a sharp lying vertical state. Let me rewrite this a little more cle...

Wonderful replies guys. I agree about the circle. I have played with this idea for a long time - trying flat lying lydian scales over sharp lying lydian keys which for the most part give us what sounds to me like the traditional horizontal scales. The flat lying keys all tie into the underlying shar...

It's an Escher sketch, a bit like 'Being and Time.' Terms like root and tonic and key seem to have contextual meanings. Great image, Bb. Sometimes it helps me to think that an F major scale can be seen in two different contexts. One, as BbVh, and one as F lydian 11 tone order. The first gives us a ...
