The great improvising clarinettist Perry Robinson died this week. Here is his personal account from "The Travelling Man" of his time as a student at The School of Jazz Lennox https://books.google.ca/books?id=G1eg3n ... &q&f=false And here's the trailer for a movie on the same subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_cont ... vpuHPGVVwQ

Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, David Baker, Paul Bley, Steve Kuhn, Ran Blake, Larry Ridley were also students. George Russell was on the faculty with Gunther Schuller, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Giuffre, Jim Hall, the MJQ and many others

Thanks sfphotoworks. I never met Perry Robinson, but I would go to gigs in New York as an audience member and from time to time his name would be unexpectedly announced and he'd come on and do some amazing free jazz improvisation and then leave. He was a legend. He also maintained a close friendship with the bass player Henry Grimes, who was on his first album. Henry disappeared from music for a while and then reappeared in Los Angeles, Perry went out to visit him. He tells the amazing story in this AAJ interview: https://www.allaboutjazz.com/a-fireside ... f.php?pg=3

There's another story in Perry's book about how he and Jimmy Giuffre were watching George Russell and Ornette Coleman play together at Lenox - and after they finished Jimmy fell to the floor kicking his legs in the air with excitement - at the sounds he heard.

Glad you like his playing.

A link (thanks to Sandy Williams) to an unpublished recording of George Russell Sextet playing live at The School of Jazz in Lenox:
This is the setlist: http://tela.sugarmegs.org/_asxtela/asxc ... noxMA.html
This is where to search for the link to the music http://tela.sugarmegs.org/ Note: search for George Russell and then scroll way down through the list of other stuff to the Lennox recordings (Sept 1960).
PS: There are also recordings in this set from many other musicians at the Benefit Concert (Sept 1959).

The film Music Inn was completed in 2007. I'm searching now. Here is a trailer with GR saying "Ornette Coleman" at 1:18:
