DO NOT make insulting, mean spirited remarks about anyone or their work; there are a plethora of sites where you can rant unfettered. If you attack someone personally, your comments will be removed. You can post it, but I'm not paying for it. Go elsewhere, and let those artists who are actually interested in discussion and learning have the floor. 2. Please don't feel you have to spend your time "defending" the LCC to those who come here with the express purpose of disproving it. George worked for decades to disprove it himself; if you know his music, there's no question that it has gravity. And a final word: George was famous for his refusal to lower his standards in all areas of his life, no matter the cost. He twice refused concerts of his music at Lincoln Center Jazz because of their early position on what was authentically jazz. So save any speculation about the level of him as an artist and a man. The quotes on our websites were not written by George; they were written by critics/writers/scholars/fans over many years. Sincerely, Alice

Lydian Augmented, 8 or 9 tone order?

Post by ray3d »

Not to be too "nit-picky", but another matter is confusing me. On page 15 of the LCC it states that both the Lyd Aug and Lyd dim scales represent the "Nine Tone Vertical Order" of the LC scale. Yet, the +5 degree is the eighth tone listed in the hierarchy. The flat 3 is the ninth. I can see how the Lyd dim is therefore of the Nine Tone order. However, as the +5 allows for all of the notes of the Lyd Aug scale, and occurs in the 8th position, how is the Lyd Aug scale a representative of the Nine Tone order instead of the Eight Tone order?

The +5 is in the 8-tone order. If the set of notes includes the b3 too then the +5 is in the 9 tone order. Another way to look at it is that 123#4567 are all in the 8 and 9 tone order.
This could be a good time to look at the section of the book about 'official scales'.
