Application/ Lydian Augmented

Postby motherlode » Sat Jun 16, 2012 6:29 pm

As you can see the LydAug is everywhere. And what we have here is an uncommon application. But REAL mind you and easy to apply
if so desired. Here's how: On any dom7th play the LydAud from the 5th.

Years ago when I studied orchestration we learned by studying scores. That's why my LCC observations are based on real world music and less on conjecture.
Which is to say, the LCC is a living concept. Not just some sort of mental exercise locked up in the dark corners of one's mind. How can we recognize a rich man? By what he spends, not by how much money he has locked away in some bank.

Anyway, I wrote out 12 bars of blues to make my case and I'm USING EVERYTHING that I learned from the "Eclipse" example; sequences, LydAug on the 5th, etc.
The LydAug spots are in red AND I slowed the phrasing to give the listener a chance to hear what I want to be heard (remember you have to help the listener to hear you).

I hope all of this has made someone think AND gain a greater appreciation of what a wonderful (the best) system we have in the LCC.

Motherlode,

On Saturday I thought up some lines on 7th chords around the cycle for a fellow harmonica player. Only the next day did I realize I had started the whole thing on the Maj 7 over a 7th chord, and that the first measure could be seen as chromatic embellishment of the Lyd Aug on the 5th. lol!

Check it out:

Yes, Yes, Yes, that's the idea. I don't blame you for laughing.

I really like what you did from the 'an of 4' in the 2nd measure going into next phrase (and again in the 6th bar).
You don't really hear the previous phrase until you play THAT phrase. You hear it after the fact. I think there's a term for that...just can't think of it (treppenwitz perhaps?).
I just love music when it does that.

As you see, a major 7th on a dom is unusual, but it isn't weird at all if you know how.
