It may be apparrent from the above example that in proposing a polymodal view of the "higher tonal orders", I conveniently skipped the case of quoting the LT from ONE mode over (or the LS one step in the flat direction), citing instead the cases of Lydian scales two and three steps away. T...

The reason I'm bringing all this up, is because although I'm pretty much a stranger to polytonality, I'm beginning to see it as an important element in an overall understanding of all things "Conceptual". My desire is to find a way to unify all aspects of the Concept: the whole vertical/ho...

What a terribly cool sound! (The Mingus, I mean - but the Bartok is nice, too.) As you pointed out, it's also interesting how key signatures are inescapably seen as misleading, if not completely irrelevant, once a composer ventures beyond the major/minor mentality. Knowing, as we do, that the 'churc...

Excellent quote. Obviously I revealed that I didn't know the difference between polytonality and polymodality. So if I understand the Bartok reference, polytonality would describe the multiple Lydian scale thing I was getting at. But polymodality... I'm going to need more help. I'm sure you're examp...

Polytonality

I have searched the Forum for information/discussion on Polytonality/Polymodality (not sure if there is really a difference), and there's basically nothing here yet. Does anyone have some thoughts on the "traditional" approach to polytonality in Jazz perhaps, and how the Concept has enligh...

Mrs. Russell: I'm not sure if you read the Forum, but you have my sincerest condolences on the loss of your husband. The world knew him for his innovations in art and understanding, but your loss is a personal one. May you find comfort in our Creator's assurances. Job 14:14, 15 John 6:40; 11:24, 25 ...

Dont' Hate Me - I Disagree With Russell's Theory

This is going to get me stoned but I want to express my truth about the Concept. When it comes to the vertical purity and objective vantage point of Lydian over Major - I'm sold. When it comes to appreciating the difference between vertical and horizontal - I'm sold. A system to categorize and (atte...

Daniel: I have heard of this symmetrical interval theory, involving a descending harmonic series, or "undertone series". I'm not sure whether I believe in it's existence or not. Hindemith certainly discounted it's existence. I have found that almost all instances where it is referred to ar...

Although there is no consensus about what the particular character of each key is, there is generally agreement that each key seems to possess something of a character or personality. Part of this, of course, is due to mechanical considerations, like what chord and scale shapes (for a pianist, eg) y...

By the lack of response to this question, I take it either I'm being a bit vague as to what I'm getting at, or it's just too big a topic to tackle. Anyone familiar with the concept knows the basic construct of a major triad - the first, third, and fifth tones of the harmonic series (or overtone seri...

I appreciate Andrew's comment above (just read it), and I think it basically goes along with my ultimate conclusion on the matter, but I'll paste in my 2 cents (ok more like 2 bucks) anyway: The overtone series is well-known, but at the same time presents a tremendous riddle/mystery to humankind. Ou...

Major versus Minor

What is your take on the major/minor phenomenon?

Do you think that Lydian scales a minor third apart have some kind of correspondence, or what do you think is responsible for the whole minor concept?

(Major triads have their precedence in the overtone series, while the minor does not).

It is not as simple as it seems, is it? Our musical training and experience can actually make us less objective when it comes to discerning levels of dissonance. I wonder if consensus on this can even be reached? If not, then the Lydian Chromatic Order is one working model that one may use, but the ...
