Right. I'm not suggesting that Ab negates the tonical authority of C in a Lydian scale built upon it. Like you said, the C Lydian scale is added to, but not ultimately changed from C Lydian. I do think, however, that interval tonics are a basic manifestation of VTG, and therefore all vertical struct...

Interval Tonics - Consistent With the LCS?

Hi Bob, I appreciate your point, and so renamed this thread. My enthusiasm regarding my own personal discoveries seems to have momentarily outweighed my respect for GR and those in the Forum. My apologies to any whom I may have offended. That said, I would love to hear your feedback on the subject, ...

Sandy: With much respect, I think that maybe you misunderstand me (then again maybe I misunderstand GR). I am not saying that F# is more ingoing with F lydian than Ab or Eb. I am saying that the ladder DOES NOT EXTEND UPWARD beyond the 7th tone in the ladder, and so therefore F# (Gb) is FIVE steps b...

Interval Tonics - Their Effect Upon the LCS

I came into the LCC world looking for unity and consistency of understanding. However, there are two statements on page 3 of LCC that I have always seen as contradictory. The first is: "An ascending order of six consecutive intervals of a fifth offers, more than any other order of intervals, th...

The additional point about interval tonics was the missing puzzle piece for me.

Without the benefit of either of the older books, your step-by-step, visual description helped me to make sense of this chart. Until now, I was stumped.

Thanks

In the 2001 edition, the Tonal Gravity Chart is referred to in a footnote, indicating that it will (would have?) appear in Volume II. That volume is dedicated to HTG and SVTG.

Do the earlier editions point out how it is applicable on those levels?

I rearranged the chart you posted so that the intervals appear in the order of a ladder of fifths. It's cool to see in the Lydian section how there is an order to which MG's contain the intervals.

Does this chart help you choose from among possible scales when you encounter a certain interval in a melody? Is that it's purpose?

Side note: the typewriter font/formatting really makes you appreciate the bobappleton-ized 4th edition!

The River Trip - Carried Along By HTG

One of the much-appreciated analogies offered in the LCC is the "river trip" thing, helping one understand different approaches to navigating a succession of chords. I think there is more that can be understood by the analogy of a river. Unlike a road, a river has a current that travels in...

Ches: I am sorry to have misinterpreted what you were asking. I certainly did not mean to lump you, especially, in with those merely looking for a quick jump-start to their playing. I appreciate your respect, as well as motherlode's. Being that many intertwine their musical and theoretical viewpoint...

Good questions Ches, and thanks for posing them. Are you proposing a different "Western Order"? Kind of. I'm not suggesting a different 12-note scale in some other order than the LCS. I'm suggesting simply sticking to the Lydian scale and considering any larger-than-lydian structures, whet...

BTW, it is important to point out that the parallel- triad thing is pretty much universal, whereas the ladder thing comes historically from monophonic musical cultures. Only ET makes the ladder fit with polyphonic harmony, and the essential features of the Concept (chord/scale unity, parent scale/mo...

I promised to post my theoretical undercurrents to the above proposed ideas, so here it is: Russell's concept starts by establishing that the Lydian scale has a purer, more objective vertical nature than does the Major scale. This is an objective, unassailable fact, demonstrated amply by a side-by-s...

Yes, Bartok's unique twist actually twisted the binoculars into focus for me. I'm glad I asked for input on polytonality BEFORE going on my tangent because your Bartok stuff actually propelled me ahead on this. I tried playing some flat-lying pentatonic melodies in the RH while laying down pure Lydi...

Of course I'll bear with you. I'm the one on thin ice here, and you're bearing with me, so thank you. You're second guess was right: I think that in these pairings, one merely PERCEIVES the two to be one, when they are in fact, two. You were concerned that the 'poly' is lost in my proposed method. I...
