Your post brings up an interesting quote from the book on page 211" purely vertical modes: Lydian on F, Locrian on B and Dorian on D within the C major scale". So, the CMGs are the other four, right? I like to think that I can play and hear vertically and horizontally at the same time. In ...

A C AD scale may not seem to parent too many new chords but it is rich in harmonic color. It contains B,D,F, Ab major triads, BDFAb minor triads, BDF,Ab seventh chords, Cdim maj7#5, Eb dim maj7#5, Gbdim maj7#5, Adim maj7#5, and so on. There’s a lot of color to slap on the wall.

Great question. You are in the one of the most interesting parts of the book. I think if you look at the top of page 125 it answers most of your questions. Cmaj can exist as both a PMG I( C LT) and a CMG Vh (F LT). "If it means the member scales of C, then is it really still a CMG of F LC, or w...

I played several gigs with him. They were all big band gigs with him playing in the section. He was a sweet ,quiet person. The last gig I did with him I ask him to sign the picture of him with Wes, and David Baker. He got a chuckle out of that. To be honest, even though I learned most of what I know...

Fernando, I think your analysis is correct if you are using it in a horizontal manner with C as the key. Those same notes are very close to what is commonly called the Db augmented scale, Db, E,F.G#,A, C. Though this scale isn’t found in the LCC book you can certainly use the Concept to put it in ...

I hear a Bbdim/maj7 or A/Bb as having a pretty MG sound that doesn't have a relation to a m7b5 genre ('cept G m7b5, or Emi7b5).

That looks like a useful program. I've been using the Amazing Slow Downer (ronimusic.com) which does similar stuff. One really neat trick that most people don't know is that you can slow down video in Quicktime. Go to 'Window' then 'Show AV controls' and at the bottom right you have the option to sl...

Sounds like you would have enjoyed the 1959 edition of the LCC which came with a slide rule for helping figure out the various scales.

Sometimes they( the horizontal and vertical elements) are pretty clear cut. For instance, the melody of Stella By Starlight is entirely within one major scale except for one note and the harmony for the song still takes an interesting journey. A blues can be reharmonized to a great degree but still ...

It is important to distinguish between the Western Order of Tonal Gravity and the Circle of Close to Distant Relationships. The WOTG is tool for judging the ingoing-outgoing spectrum within the realm of Vertical Tonal Gravity. The Circle of Close to Distant Relationships is a tool for, among other t...

The broken link in chain of 5ths in the ingoing-outgoing tonal orders in the realm of Vertical Tonal Gravity makes sense to me. The Circle of Close to Distant relationships in Horizontal Gravity is an unbroken circle of fifths. If you were to present a series of scales that represent the different v...
