Re: Math and the LCC - with an example
"super lydian' if these are your words, what does it mean?
i use "superlydian" to describe lydian augmented, the logic being that if superlocrian is the flattest mode of the melodic minor one tone flat from locrian, then "superlydian" is the...

Re: Chord Function In The LCCOTO?

chespernevins: "Some more thoughts regarding chord function in the LCC - check out p. 47 of the old book. GR uses the close to distant relationship idea with regards to each chord and its surrounding chords, but also in comparison to the overall key of the music. However, because there is so mu...

joey, i didn't follow through the numbers until you asked the question. i paid them little attention because they looked so familiar, since the study of harmonic ratios generates lots of examples of exponents of 2s and 3s such as seen here. here's a way to simplify the chart in question: let x = 256...

joey, i was able to derive most of the values in the table by the following method. it appears to be derived from a half step being defined as a series of five perfect fourths: C = 1/1 F = 4/3 Bb = 16/9 Eb = 32/27 Ab = 128/81 Db = 256/243 and using the interval 256/243 to define a chromatic series b...

chesper, your ratios are correct. funny thing that no one has mentioned (that i am aware of) is how these ideas may actually mutually support each other: D, radially expanded outwards with (either) fourths (or fifths) yields A D G and expanding again yields E A D G C C, climbing the ladder of fifths...

i agree that the concept need not be an all or nothing proposition. good conversation; carry on... i also agree with much in the previous posts; far too numerous to quote, but in particular that something is lost when viewing the concept as merely a renaming of modes and other materials... one thing...

"But a ladder of pure 5ths only exists within Pythagorean tuning..." i was talking about equal tempered fifths. by the way, of course you already know that a pure perfect fifth is 3:2 (pure number 1.5) and that an equal tempered fifth is 2 raised to the power (7/12) or 2^(7/12) or 1.498307...

actually strachs, i have no problem whatsoever with what you're writing. i was really trying to point out that the ladder (in my view) is simply a series of fifths rather than a series of compounding harmonic ratios. there is a mention of the interval 3072:243 (which i will assume for the moment lea...

Harmonic Ratios

hypothesis - the only harmonic ratio that is necessary for LCC to be derived (or the circle of fifths for that matter) is 3:2, the perfect fifth (russell merely calls it a "fifth") my view on harmonic ratios is: first, that it is easily demonstrable that the first non-octave interval produ...

Organizing Principles

my two one-hundredths of a half-step: i love paul nelson's composertools and accompanying apps. set theory (as utilized by forte, rahn, nelson and others) provides an analytical tool to sort out all possible combinations within the twelve tone system. i also love the particulars of harmonic theory a...

strachs, if C is the tonic of each of its lydian scale components: C G D A E B F# through the ladder of fiths, then Db is the tonic of its lydian scale components: Db Ab Eb Bb F C G therefore, the C is not the tonic of C# (the eighth tone) because Db is the tonic of its lydian scale's sixth tone, C....
