My deepest condolences to George Russell's family on this very sad day. His music and his theory have been such an inspiration to so many artists from different backgrounds all over the world and his legacy will surely outface time to stand as one of the major artistic and intellectual achievements ...

In re-reading my original post in retrospect I feel some of my criticism appeared more harsh than I intended given that as you say the Concept was never intended to be a 'methodology' as such. I dont take issue with the basic thrust of the Concept, only with the manner of it's presentation. As with ...

The Nardis melody seems to be alternating between two scales on the one tonic. An eastern sounding scale, R,b2,3,4, 5,#5,7 and a blues or pentatonic minor on the same root.

Good to see that the 1957 Brandeis Festival collaboration between Evans, Mr. Russell and Gunther Schuller is on CD at last. I didn't realize it had been reisued 18 months back! What amazing scores ( where else can you hear Mingus, Milton Babbitt, George Russell and Jimmy Guiffre works in the same pr...

Yes I look forward with interest to that book and this has indeed been an interesting discussion. It just occured to me after my last post that there might be circumstances in which the Lydian #4 based scales are more applicable in a horozontal situation. What if you had a progression that resoved t...

I would be quite happy to stick to the basics and take it on trust that we use horizontal gravity when relating to a group of chords with a clear resolving tonic. So C lydian chromatic would be the station implied by a group of chords that resolved to C Major. I just don't think it was fully explain...

A G major scale / C Vh implies two tonics because G A B C resolves from G to C and then D E F# G resolves to G. That’s the whole premise of the horizontal scale, right? Two tonics that tug back and forth to give that feeling of a need to move. So take a G mixolydian / F IIh mode: Doesn’t G A B ...

[quote]So if you are using an F major scale over chords that go from Bb Lydian to an F Lydian tonic station ( G- C7 -> F ), then, yes you can consider the F major scale as being in the FLC Universe, but if you start using other F lydian scales, it’s going to be a little “out thereâ€

some thoughts on, and possible criticisms of the L.C.C.

If I have a criticism of the l.c.c. it would be that it's bias nowadays is very much towards enlarging and refining its initial presentation at the expense of a concise and complete overview. This means that those now approaching the theory for the first time with the intention of aquiring tools and...

I'd say that Miller's approach in Vol 1 of his book is one that focusses primarily on composition using voicings dervived the modes of the basic scales as they are traditionally thought of, although they are used here in a non-tradtional non-diatonic way. Which is to say that Miller uses the term 'c...

For me the concept is a wonderful tool, but maybe it's the general backlash against the subsequent dominance of the chord scale approach throughout jazz education that has something to do with attitudes towards it today. These approaches are somewhat watered down derivations of the original ideas of...
